Short Story Essentials

If you have stories (imagined or true) clamoring for the page, this class is for you! We’ll explore the essential components of short stories including setting, scene, point of view, characterization and dialogue; practice shaping prose from inspiration to written word; and learn the rules so we can break them. Techniques apply to both fiction and memoir and longer work. New writers welcome.

Cathy Warner, MFA, has led writing workshops for almost 20 years. Author of two books of poetry Home by Another Road and Burnt Offerings, Cathy received the Steinbeck and SuRaa fiction awards and was nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best American Essays. Her fiction, short memoir and essays have appeared in dozens of print and online journals and several anthologies. In addition to teaching, writing and editing, Cathy is a home renovator, real estate broker and enjoys nature photography. Find her at cathywarner.com.
