Early Release: Anacortes: Winter

Not offered in Fall, check back in December for 2019 offerings.

The Anacortes Early Release Enrichment program is presented in partnership between the Anacortes School District and Western Washington University's Shannon Point Marine Center.  Students will experience hands-on science and art activities at Island View Elementary and take a field trip to Western Washington University's Shannon Point Marine Center on the last day.

Youth program participants and staff must abide by all University regulations and program rules.

Courses

Finding Phyla

Each day will focus on a different marine phylum. Students will learn an in-depth life history of marine organisms found in the Pacific Northwest, and their congener species found around the world. 

Course Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of marine organisms’ life cycles, and physical characteristics.
  • Become familiar with the marine habitats that organisms inhabit, and predator-prey interactions.
  • Begin to recognize the similarities and differences of congener species. 

Students are asked to bring:

  • A rain jacket
  • A healthy snack
  • A water bottle
  • A curious mind

Island View Elementary
2501 J Ave., Anacortes
Directions

Children are able to ride the school bus from their elementary school to Island View Elementary School please have them bring a permission slip to ride the bus.  Children will be able to eat their lunch before the program. The last day of the program will be held at the Shannon Point Marine Center the children will be taken to Shannon Point by bus from Island View Elementary. We ask that parents pick their children up at the Marine Center on the last day.

Cancellation Policy

All classes and programs are self-sustaining and subject to minimum enrollments. Cancellations must be made seven days in advance of the session and must be submitted in writing through youth@wwu.edu. Refunds are available to those who have cancelled in the appropriate time frame, less a $25 handling fee.
